BIOS modificati per Acer per attivare impostazioni nascoste.


I Bios moddati sono molto utili per l'attivazione di opzioni non presenti nel BIOS di default.Questa GUIDA è testata solo su alcuni modelli [Aspire 9420, Aspire 7110, Aspire 9410, Aspire 9410Z, TravelMate 5110, TravelMate 5610, TravelMate 5620].Nelle prossime guide vi mostrerò come fare con altri modelli Acer.State sintonizzati.Tra poco le guide saranno disponibili anche per HP,Asus,Sony e Dell.
ATTENZIONE:l'installazione di questa versione di BIOS in un modello differente potrebbe danneggiare la Piastra Madre.

Note: For Virtualization (VT-x) support, please check on Intel/AMD website to know whether your CPU does support VT-x or not. In addition to BIOS support, you also need VT-x capable processor to use Virtualization. To run 64-bit guest OS on Intel computers, you will need CPU that support 64-bit & also VT-x.

There are a lot of BIOS MOD request forums out there but most of them only specialize in SLIC modification. Our job is to unlock hidden menu in the BIOS. I don't want to use "specialize" word here but I know the "how" to get the job done. Based on the old thread Acer Laptop with Phoenix BIOS: Enable Virtualization, I decided to open new thread which specifically deals with BIOS MOD requests.

F.A.Q:-
Q1. Who will mostly benefit from this?
A1. Users who have at least one year old notebook which have a CPU that have a capability, for example, Virtualization but it is disabled & there is no way to enable it with the original BIOS.
Q2. Is it safe to flash BIOS with modified BIOS image?
A2. In term of "flashing BIOS", the risk is the same as flashing the BIOS chip with original BIOS image. Yes & No. No, if you don't know what you're doing. Yes, if you do it properly (I recommend doing it in DOS, using USB bootable flash drive) & you know how to recover from failed BIOS flash or corrupted BIOS.

Possible BIOS modification - depend on original BIOS

Our job description:-
if possible:
- unhide Intel VT-x/AMD-V menu
- unhide SATA AHCI menu
- unhide Speedstep menu
- unhide any "harmless" menu

only by requests or if it is possible:
update SLIC v2.1 - not supported
patch DSDT table - not supported
- update NetworkBoot (PXE) Bios

CPU Microcode Update Request

CPU Microcode Update only useful if notebook can boot with the CPU in question but got a Microcode Update warning message like this:-

You can see an example of the problem at post #1490. Solution at post #1504. Confirmation the problem fixed at post #1506.

If notebook doesn't boot with CPU in question & didn't get the Microcode Update error message as illustrated above, BIOS mod with CPU Microcode Update will not fix the problem.


Requirement for SLIC Mod Request

UPDATE 22 JANUARY 2011:-
  • SLIC mod request is not supported as it can bypass windows activation which can be considered/interpreted act of piracyforum rules ). If you sometime or occasionally re-format your windows & have problem with windows activation because of the problematic internet connection (shocking but true), you'll need to contact Microsoft for manual/offline activation or contact your notebook manufacturer for restore disk.

Flash BIOS in DOS mode

How to create DOS bootable disk - post #64.
1) Make sure battery is full for notebook & power cord is plugged in.
2) Boot with DOS bootable disk
3) At command prompt, enter this command:-
Code:
phlash16.exe /x /s /mode=3 bios-filename
Note: Change bios-filename with your BIOS filename, e.g. JV50T109.wph.
4) Wait until it finish & reboot itself or follow the on-screen instruction. DO NOT interrupt the process.

WARNING! Flashing BIOS is very dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. There are external factor that we cannot control to ensure such process will 100% success. The only thing we can ensure you is that the modified BIOS image is properly build with zero warning & error. We will not responsible for failed BIOS flash or any other failure. Use it at your own risk.


BIOS Recovery - Collection of CRISIS Packages & Procedures

Good news is, there is a way to recover from failed BIOS flash or corrupted BIOS. To achieve this, we will require a Crisis Recovery Disk. Crisis Recovery Disk is the final fail-safe mechanism to recover the BIOS. The BIOS recovery procedure can be found at the bottom of this post. Keep in mind, the hotkey & procedure to recover corrupted BIOS may varied between different model even it is from the same manufacturer. Believe me, I know. 

CRISIS Disk (WINCRIS):-
Acer Aspire 9420 BIOS Recovery.rar
Only need to replace the "BIOS.WPH" file with yours. Make sure the BIOS.WPH file is the one working with your model. Preferably the original BIOS image file. The BIOS.WPH file in the package is for Aspire 9420 (also compatible with: Aspire 7110, Aspire 9410, Aspire 9410Z, TravelMate 5110, TravelMate 5610, TravelMate 5620)


EDIT: If BIOS recovery is unsuccessful, please create CRISIS disk using floppy disk or USB flash drive & with option "Compress The Bin File" selected. During the recovery process, DON'T press any key, just in case.


Special Notes for CRISIS disk:-
  • It is essential to create CRISIS disk in 32-bit OS, preferably Windows XP.
  • If you use USB flash drive, make sure the size is no more than 2GB.
  • If your notebook reboot after triggering BIOS recovery mode (by pressing the hotkey), just play along & don't interrupt it at all. It may reboot a couple of time before it successfully recovered the corrupted BIOS.
These Special Notes are based on the reports I read on several forums & websites. There is no official documentation to support it but it is best to follow it to reduce the possible factor that can caused failed BIOS recovery.


This is step-by-step BIOS recovery which is works for me & most Acer notebook:-
1) Download Crisis Disk maker above.
2) Create Crisis Disk using WINCRIS (need a floppy disk or usb pen drive/usb flash drive).
3) Remember to replaced the "BIOS.WPH" file with yours. It is important to rename the BIOS file to "BIOS.WPH".
4) Make sure the battery and the power cord are connected to the laptop. Also laptop need to be in power-off state.
5) Hold in Fn+Esc and then press the power button (without releasing Fn+Esc key).
6) The USB floppy drive/pen drive/flash drive light will flash as it reads the BIOS file from the disk. You can release Fn+Esc key.
7) While in recovery process, display will always blank.
8) Recovery process will take a while (a minute or two). Laptop will automatically restart when recovery process succeed. You should see POST after restart.

2nd version step-by-step BIOS recovery which is works for some Acer notebooks:-
1) Download Crisis Disk maker above.
2) Create Crisis Disk using WINCRIS (need a floppy disk or usb pen drive/usb flash drive).
3) Remember to replaced the "BIOS.WPH" file with yours. It is important to rename the BIOS file to "BIOS.WPH".

5) Hold in Fn+Esc then plugged in (AC) power cord. The Power button flashes orange once. 
6) Then press the power button (without releasing Fn+Esc key).
7) The USB floppy drive/pen drive/flash drive light will flash as it reads the BIOS file from the disk. You can release Fn+Esc key.
8) While in recovery process, display will always blank.
9) Recovery process will take a while (a minute or two). Laptop will automatically restart when recovery process succeed. You should see POST after restart.

This is step-by-step BIOS recovery which is works for most Dell notebooks:-
1) Create the CRISIS disk using USB flash drive
2) Disconnect any external devices, battery & power cord
3) Plugged in the CRISIS disk to your Dell notebook
4) Press "End" key
5) While holding the "End" key, plugged in the power cord & then release the "End" key (DO NOT PRESS THE POWER BUTTON)
6) The notebook should automatically powered on
7) Let it run for 10 minutes, just in case
8) If the recovery successful, your notebook should automatically restart with working BIOS.

This is step-by-step BIOS recovery which is works for Toshiba L500:-
* Use CRISIS DISK - Phlash16_v1.6.9.5.rar as a base package.
* Rename your notebook BIOS file (.ROM or .WPH) to BIOS.WPH
* If you have both files (.ROM & .WPH), use .WPH file
* Replace the BIOS.WPH inside this package with yours

1) remove or unplugged any external disk & peripherals
2) remove battery & unplugged power cord from notebook
3) this is OPTIONAL & I believe not necessary but it doesn't hurt to try; remove optical drive & hard disk from notebook
4) Press Fn+B. While holding it & plugged in power cord. Don't release Fn+B yet. If your computer doesn't automatically powered on when plugged in the power cord, press the power button. Don't release Fn+B yet.
5) After a couple of seconds, release the Fn+B keys.
6) Let it run at least 10 minutes.
7) If BIOS recovery is successful, notebook will automatically shutdown itself. When turn it ON again, it should boot normally with working BIOS.

Lenovo Ideapad u350
The BIOS recovery procedure for Lenovo Ideapad U350 notebook is:-

* CRISIS package: AS8942G CRISDISK - BIOS 3109.rar or
* CRISIS package: Phlash16_v1.7.0.18_Dell_Recovery.rar
Replace the BIOS.WPH file with your notebook BIOS file, extracted from Lenovo BIOS update webpage. Rename your BIOS file to BIOS.WPH.
1) Create the CRISIS disk using USB flash drive
2) Make sure your notebook is power off
3) Plug in the CRISIS disk to your Lenovo notebook
4) Press "Fn"+"R" key
5) While holding the "Fn"+"R" key, press power button
6) The notebook should power on and USB stick light showing activity
7) Stop pressing "Fn"+"R" key, after you see USB stick blinking LED
8) Your notebook should automatically restart with working BIOS in 2-3 minutes.
VERY IMPORTANT: Do not take off your battery!! It seems that before flashing, it verify AC/DC connection and battery level. If one of them is not ok, then reflash is stopped.

Special Notes for CRISIS disk:-

- Phlash16.exe v1.7.0.18_DiffSize (I have two phlash16.exe, same version but different size) is tested on Acer Aspire 6930G
* Rename your notebook BIOS file (.ROM or .WPH) to BIOS.WPH
* If you have both files (.ROM & .WPH), use .WPH file
* Replace the BIOS.WPH inside this package with yours


Extra info about modified BIOS image for Acer Aspire 9420 at post #4: BIOS_Aspire9420_VT_R5 & later release
  • This modified BIOS image contain a modified DSDT which is part of ACPI table. You may require to re-install graphic card driver after flashing with this modified BIOS image. The reason is I inject different subvendor-id for graphic card device. It totally cosmetic & will not influence the behavior of graphic card.
